Taliban attack on Maimana repulsed with people’s help (Video)
MAIMANA (Pajhwok): Security forces have repulsed a Taliban attack on Maimana, the capital of northwestern Faryab province, an official said on Monday.
Local security officials said the insurgents stormed the first, ninth and eighth police districts from four sides late on Sunday night.
Deputy Governor Abdul Sattar Barez told Pajhwok Afghan News the militants had reached near the Faryab Central Jail, but their jailbreak attempt was thwarted.
“The Taliban planned to mount a Kunduz-like attack on Maimana, but local people and security forces were fully prepared and pushed the militants back,” he said.
Barez added the attackers suffered heavy casualties and the death of a commanders Sheikh Wali Jan was confirmed. More details about casualties would be provided later.
