Daesh blamed gunning down Nangarhar scholar
JALALABAD (Pajhwok): A religious scholar was shot dead by militants in the Batikot district of eastern Nangarhar provinceon Wednesday, an official said.
Ahmad Zia Abdulzai, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News that Maulvi Gul Agha Jan was killed on the to his madrasa (seminary) in the morning.
Without blaming anyone, he said Agha had no links with the government. But a security official, wishing anonymity, claimed the scholar was killed by Islamic State (IS) fighters.
A resident of the district, Gul Mohammad, also said Agha Jan was killed in Saloram Farm area.He called the scholar a neutral man, teaching Quranic lessons.
The teacher was an honest man who occasionally criticised both government and militants, the resident added, insisting the victim had no links with any particular group
