Taliban storm Kandahar security check-points
KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): Taliban militants attacked security checkpoints in Ghorak district of southern Kandahar province on Wednesday, officials said.
The rebels stormed the checkpoints and the district headquarters from three directions in the morning and the ensuing clash with security forces was still ongoing, a security official said on condition of anonymity.
Four militants and one Afghan National Army (ANA) soldier were killed and two other local policemen were wounded during the firefight, with Afghan Air Force airstrikes hitting the rebel positions.
The official said telecom services had been cut off in the district after the insurgents targeted the only tower of Afghanistan Wireless Communication Company (AWCC) in the district centre.
The Taliban wanted to capture the district, but Afghan security forces pushed them back and forced them to flee as a result of airstrikes, another official, who also wanted to be unnamed, said.
The governor’s spokesman, Samim Khpalwak, confirmed the clashes but provided no details.
