Kabul youth rally condemns Kunduz debacle
KABUL (Pajhwok): A youth organization on Thursday organized a protest rally in capital Kabul to condemn the fall of Kunduz City to Taliban militants, calling for the officials responsible to be punished.
The Afghanistan Youth Association (AYA) members alleged the Kunduz attack was preplanned and the masterminds behind the attack should be exposed and punished.
AYA chief Syed Abdullah Hashmi said their protest was aimed to denounce the Taliban attack on Kunduz and express support for the national security forces.
Two weeks earlier, hundreds of Taliban gunmen stormed Kunduz City from various directions, capturing the strategic city after a few hours of clashes with security forces.
But Afghan security forces recaptured the city after launching a counter-offesnive, driving the militants from various key positions.
The Defence Ministry says 150 insurgents have been killed and 90 others wounded during the counteroffensive. The forces had reclaimed Bala Hesar hilltop, pushing back the Taliban from Pul Rahmat Khan area.
Interior Minister Noor-ul-Haq Ulumi had said security forces retook Kunduz city despite rumours that government was weak and unable to take back the strategic province.
According to Kunduz police spokesman Sayed Sarwar Hussaini, Afghan security forces have cleared Bala Hisar fortress, the National Directorate of Security (NDS) office, municipality building, zonal hospital, doctors without borders building and Kabul, Imam Sahib and Khan Abad ports in Kunduz City of Taliban.
He had said heavy casualties were inflicted on the insurgents, who were unable halt the security forces advance.
