No decision yet on Resolute Support mission duration: NATO
Before taking any decision, the alliance would assess the security situation and the capabilities of the Afghan security forces, the NATO secretary-general said in Brussels on Thursday.
“We will assess the situation in Afghanistan and also the need for the NATO presence based on military advice. And based on those assessments, we will make our decisions.”
Jens Stoltenberg told reporters ahead of the North Atlantic Council at the level of defence ministers: “We have not made final decisions on the duration of the Resolute Support mission or the force levels.”
However, he promised NATO would continue supporting the Afghans, either through the Resolute Support mission or with a new enduring partnership,a civilian-led mission with military elements.
“What is certain is that we will continue to support the Afghans but we are constantly assessing in what form and in what way we will do that…we will also continue to fund the Afghan army and security forces,” he added.
