Security forces retake Gorziwan district of Faryab
MAIMANA (Pajhwok): Local officials on Saturday said Afghan security forces had recaptured the Gorzaiwan district of northern Faryab province from Taliban insurgents.
The security personnel, supported by local uprising groups, pushed the militants back on Saturday morning, Deputy Governor Abdul Sattar Barez told Pajhwok Afghan News.
The district had fallen into Taliban’s hands late on Thursday without any resistance, with the security forces saying they had retreated from the district centre as a tactical move.
The militants also vacated the district centres without any resistance, said Gulam Sakhi Navid, said a former jihadi commander, who is also a member of the uprising.
“A large number of uprising members agreed at a gathering in Balcheragh district and Maimana, the capital of Faryab, to fight against militants, but the rebels had already left the area,” he said.
Taliban have so far not commented on losing control of the district.
