Paktia customs department revenue doubles
GARDEZ(Pajhwok): The revenue of the customs department at the Gardez-Dand-i-Patan dry port has increased by two folds this year, compared with the last fiscal year.
Siddiqullah Ahmadkhel, general director of the port, linked the impressive revenue jump to a crackdown on corruption in the customs department with the help of security personnel.
As many as 347 million afghanis were collected until October 2014, but this year the collections rose to 620 million afghanis, he told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Due to insecurity in Paktika, he argued, most of traders used the Gardez-Dand-i-Patan port for exports and imports. It could be another reason behind the revenue increase, he believed.
Naseer Alamyar, the Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Industries (ACCI) provincial head, hoped the revenue of the customs office could be jacked up further if the road was given transit status.
Currently, most of goods and services are transferred from the Karachi port in Pakistan to Afghanistan through Khyber tribal region and the Torkham dry port in eastern Nangarhar province.
