Taliban blow up highway bridge in Zabul

Taliban blow up highway bridge in Zabul

Oct 13, 2015 - 17:29

QALAT (Pajhwok): Talibaninfo-icon militants blew up a large bridge on the Kabulinfo-icon-Kandahar highway in southern Zabul province on Tuesday, an official said.

The governor’s spokesman, Gul Islam Seyal, told Pajhwok Afghan News the incident took place in the morning in Bazargan area of Shah Joy district.

He said passengers on both sides of the destroyed bridge remained stranded until Afghan security forces installed an emergency bridge for traffic.

The official also said an insurgent was killed during a clash with security forces in Hassan Kariz area of the same district.

Two residents of the town, Mirza Khan and Naeem, said shopkeepers closed their businesses in the district’s bazaar fearing possible clashes between militants and security forces.

But the governor’s spokesman said the security situation was under control and some of shops had been closed to spread Taliban’s propaganda.

A police official wishing anonymity said clashes were underway between security forces and militants in Spini Bargi and Pol Sangi west of Qalat, the provincial capital. But he had no information about casualties.

Ghulam Faroq, a security official responsible for security on the Qalat-Kandahar highway, said the clash in Pol Sangi area ended with the killing of four militants.

There has been no word from the Taliban about the incident.
