Ban, Haysom applaud UNAMA worker’s role
Ban Ki-moon urged the local authorities to undertake a prompt investigation into the circumstances and motives behind the killing in Kandahar a day earlier and ensure the perpetrators were brought to justice.
While extending his deepest condolences to the family of Ms. Ulfat, he praised the staffer as a much-valued colleague, staunch human rights defender and friend to many in the UN and across Afghanistan.
UN staff worked under hazardous and trying conditions to support the Afghans in building a more prosperous future, the secretary-general said, renewing commitment to the country.
Ulfat, who had worked the past five years for UNAMA, remained committeddespite the challenging security environment, the UNAMA head said in a separate statement.
“She represented the best of what Afghan youth have to offer. Her ideals and enthusiasm were an inspiration to her colleagues and to those she helped,” Nicholas Haysom said.
