Jalalabad mayor to investigate previous contracts
JALALABAD (Pajhwok): The mayor called on residents of Jalalabad, the capital of eastern Nangarhar province, to participate in a cleanliness drive he inaugurated on Monday.
The newly appointed mayor, Hamidulalh Afghan, launched the cleanliness campaign with support of civil society activists, asking shopkeepers not to throw garbage into drains and clear footpaths.
“We are closely monitoring encroachments and would take action against violators in accordance with the law,” the mayor said.
However, a shopkeeper, Sifatulalh, said the municipality department had been unable to clean drains in-time and take garbage out of the city.
“All activities of the municipality are only a show off, its officials don’t work properly,” another resident of the city, Fazal Rahman, said.
According to Afghan, all contracts of the department would be investigated to prevent possible corruption because there were some irregularities in two contracts.
The new mayor should categorise all problems concerning his department in order to properly respond to each one, a member of the provincial council, Israrullah Murad, said.
