10 honoured at social media awards ceremony

Oct 22, 2015 - 21:01

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Ten individuals have been honoured at the first-ever Afghan Social Media Awards ceremony that took place in Kabul, organisors said on Thursday.

Heelai Noor, one of the organisors, said the ceremony was part of the Impassion Afghanistaninfo-icon’s third annual Afghan Social Media Summit.

Hosted by Pashtana Arabzai and Hashmat Stanikzai of Shamshad TV, the award presenters included Ministry of Interior spokesperson Seddiq Siddiqi, head of RTA Zarin Ansorand Afghan Olympic athlete Nesar Ahmad Bahawi.

Twitter Power User winner Malali Bashir said: “The awards will encourage Afghan womeninfo-icon to use social media and share their opinions about various issues.”

The jury members were:

 Aimal Marjan, deputy minister of information technology;

 Malalai Shinwari, former lawmaker and long-time journalist;

 Dawn Barbar, co-founder of the technology community New York Tech Meetup and former producer of the Shorty Awards;

 Xavier Damman, co-founder of Storify, which curates social media stories;

 Jean MacKenzie, executive editor of Paiwandgāh, Afghanistan’s largest citizen journalism platform;

 Ahmad Shuja, co-founder of Impassion Afghanistan;

 Massoud Hossaini, Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer.

Aimal Marjan said: "The ministry is very pleased to have partnered with Impassion Afghanistan to create the very first Afghan Social Media Awards. The awards were a great success and we congratulate all winners and organisors...”

Heelai Noor, the event producer for Impassion Afghanistan, said: “It was an amazing experience to work on the Afghan Social Media Awards, and this was the very first set – we look forward to more to come.”

But some candidates criticised the award giving process, calling it unfair and left the hall in protest.

Abdul Rahman Rahmani, a candidate for Facebook Star award, said he was in competition with four others in this category. He said was in the lead with 285 votes, but someone else who had less votes than him was announced as the winner.

He said in other categories also the process had been unfair and those who had fewer votes were announced as winners.

The event was supported and partnered by the US Embassy Public Affairs Section, TOLO TV as exclusive media partner; Roshan; Pajhwok Afghan News Agency; BlueSonic; MCIT, MoIC, Democracy International.
