800 security forces freed from Taliban siege in Faryab
MAIMANA (Pajhwok): Security officials in northern Faryab province on Thursday said around 800 security personnel who were surrounded by Taliban insurgents in Ghormach district had been rescued.
Col. Mohammad Reza Rezaee, the 209th Shaheen Corps first division spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News the forces remained besieged over the past one week in Ab-Garmak locality of Ghormach.
The forces comprising public order police, army and police personnel were freed as a result of an operation that lasted three days, he said.
He said clashes were still ongoing in the locality between security forces and insurgents and so 20 Taliban fighters, including their three commanders, had perished.
Some weapons and 12 motorcycles belonging to insurgents were also seized by security forces, he added. According to Rezaee, three army soldiers were wounded in the operation.
The Taliban are yet to comment about the incident.
