HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Hundreds of residents on Saturday donated blood in western Herat province in commemoration of Ashurainfo-icon, the 10th of Muharram.

Provincial officials say each year blood donation campaigns are conducted in Herat on Ashura. This year also, hundreds of residents donated blood across three centres in the province.

Mohammad Rafiq Sher`zai, provincial hospital spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News more than 200 people had taken part until Saturday afternoon in the campaign.

The official said he was expecting another hundred people to participate in the campaign till the end of the day. “The campaign will continue until 6.00pm.”

Sherzai said the blood would be stored in the provincial blood bank and would be used for the treatment of security forces and those in need.

Nisar Ahmad Barekzai, one of the campaign officials, said mostly youth turned up for donating blood. “This would be given to those in need.”

Mohammad Zakria said he donated blood to those security forces who were wounded in defence of the country. He urged people from other provinces also to take part in such campaigns.
