Imam Hussain stood against tyranny, injustice: Ghani
Ghani said this in statement on the 10th of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar. The day is marked by Muslims, but for Shias, it is a major commemoration of the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
Ghani said Ashura was a symbol of liberty and freedom and standing firm against injustice, tyranny and cruelty. The prophet’s grandson taught the world lessons of courage, sacrifice, dedication and fortitude on this day, he added.
Marking this day, Ghani said, was standing up against tyranny and for justice. “The tragic incident of Ashura has a profound impact on the history of Islam. When Imam Hussain saw that his grandfather’s religion was in danger and aggression on the verge of victory, he rose. He fought against tyranny and rejected extortion and bullying.”
On this day, Imam Hussain considered death part of happiness and survival with oppressors as humiliation.Ghani said Ashura had a clear message for the Muslim world from moral, personal, humanitarian and governmentalperspectives.
He also quoted Gandhi in his struggle for freeing India from Britain as saying: “If India wants to be a successful country, it must follow in the footsteps of Imam Hussain.”
According to Ghani, extremism was a major enemy to any religion and it had also harmed Islam. Because of extremism and terrorism, innocent lives were taken all the time, the president noted.
Instead of constructing factories, dams and other infrastructure, Afghanistan was spending a major portion its wealth on defence and security, Ghani remarked, calling Ashuraa good example for all countries to fight extremism.
“Imam Hussain’s behaviour teaches us that our human values should have precedence over our lives; we should try for achieving our religious, national and human goals,” Ghani said.
Like previous years, the president pleaded with the people to donate blood for the security forces and those in need on this day.
