US offers assistance to quake-hit Afghans, Pakistanis
“We offer our deepest condolences to those who have been affected by the earthquake in Afghanistan and Pakistan,” White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest told reporters.
At his daily news conference hours after the temblor struck the South Asian nations, Earnest said the United States stood ready to extend any assistance that was needed.”
US officials said they not yet received formal requests for any kind of assistance from Pakistan, where the death toll has topped 20. Hundreds of people have been wounded.
The Pentagon said it was conducting intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance operations in the Badakhshan province of Afghanistan to look into the areas damaged by the earthquake.
