Casualties as Taliban attacks beaten back in Paktika
SHARAN (Pajhwok): Security forces pushed back hundreds of militants after they launched coordinated attacks on Omna and Wazikhwa districts of southern Paktikaprovince, an official said on Thursday.
Omna districtresident Noor Rahman told Pajhwok Afghan News the fighters attacked the district headquarters and checkpoints late Wednesday night, causing the area people serious concern.
He did not have information about the casualties, but said bodies of three Afghan Local Police (ALP) personnel and four insurgents were seen at the site in the morning.
The fighters assaulted the Wazikhwa district headquarters from four directions, but security forces offered stiff resistance and inflicted heavy casualties on the attackers after border police reached to the scene.
Nabiullah Pirkhel, the governor’s spokesman,said 15 of the attackers had been killed and dozens more wounded as a result of the ensuing gunbattle.
The insurgents also attacked Omna district centre, but were beaten back, the official said, adding reinforcements rushed to the area immediately after the attack.Two ALP members were slightly wounded.
Taliban spokesmanZabihullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the attack on Omna, saying they had captured three districts and inflicted heavy casualties on policemen, but the claim was rejected by officials.
