Gunmen kidnap 4 Islam Qala customs officials
HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Gunmen abducted four customs employees at the Islam-Qala dry port in western Herat province, officials said on Thursday.
They were on their way from the port to the provincial capital, Herat City, on Wednesday afternoon when kidnapped, said Ihsanullah Hayat, the governor’s spokesman.
He told Pajhwok Afghan News it remained unclear as to why the customs officials had been kidnapped. Police, he said, had launched their investigations to identify the kidnappers and whereabouts of the abducted ones.
Bordering Iran, Islam-Qala is 120 kilometres west of Herat and most of trade between the two neighboring countries passes through this town.
Herat police chief Maj. Gen. Abdul Majid Ruzi, meanwhile, told journalists that special measures had been taken to maintain the law and order situation in the province.
He said 56 persons were detained during the past one week on various charges including kidnappings, murders, cooperation with Taliban and attacking police posts.
He said a 12-year-old body was freed from the clutches of his kidnappers last week and was reunited with his family. He urged Herat residents to cooperate with police in ensuring security.
