Afghan cricketers return home to hero’s welcome

Afghan cricketers return home to hero’s welcome

Oct 30, 2015 - 15:36

KABUL (Pajhwok): A triumphant Afghanistan cricket team returned home on Friday to a hero’s welcome from thousands of fans who performed the national dance attan at drumbeats.

Afghanistan being an associate ICC member created history by defeating a Test-playing African nation Zimbabwe in one-day international 50-over series and swept to a second historic triumph on Wednesday when they defeated the hosts 2-0 in their two-match Twenty20 series.

The victorious Afghan team arrived at the Hamid Karzai International Airport before noon on Friday to a warm welcome from government officials and a large number of cricket lovers.

The fans, dancing at drumbeats, accompanied the crickets from the airport to the Afghanistan Cricket Board.

The landmark victory over Zimbabwe in the second T20 match sparked wild celebrations across the country on Thursday, with enthusiastic Afghans beating drums and dancing.

Booms of celebratory gunshots in Jalalabad, the capital of eastern Nangarhar province, worried residents and civil society activists following Afghanistan’s emphatic win.
