Taliban block Gardez-Dand Patan highway in Paktia
GARDEZ (Pajhwok): Taliban militants on Friday blocked a key highway that connects six districts of southeastern Paktia province in the Ahmadkhel district, sources in the insurgency said.
The Gardez-Dand Patan road was blocked by the insurgents in the morning in Shawat area, local Taliban sources who wished anonymity told reporters, calling the move “war tactics.” They said the road would remain blocked indefinitely.
Pakia police chief Zalmai Oryakhel said security forces had been sent to the area to reopen the road for traffic. He said the insurgents had blocked the route to carry out attacks and prevent reinforcements from joining local forces.
A resident of the area, Nikmal, confirmed the road had been blocked since morning, leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded and creating problems for commuters.
He said the road connected six districts with the provincial capital, Gardez, and people would face a lot of inconvenience if timely measures to reopen the road were not taken.
