Senators renew call for election dates, Loya Jirga
KABUL (Pajhwok): Mesharano Jirga members on Monday renewed their demand for the announcement of dates to hold parliamentary and district council elections and convening of a traditional Loya Jirga.
Earlier, former jihadi commanders have also called for a Loya Jirga to be called into session to amend the Constitution.
Senator Sher Mohammad Akhunzada, speaking at today’s session, called for a grand Loya Jirga because according to him the government had lost the ability to run the country’s affairs.
He said the security situation in most provinces was terrible, adding that some districts were under rebels’ siege.
Senator Zalmai Zabuli from Zabul province, said: “We want a grand Loya Jirga to be organised because the current government has failed to improve the law and order.”
Another MP Maulvi Muhauddin Munsif said: “Convening a Loya Jirga would be impossible before the conduct of fresh Wolesi Jirga and district council elections.”
Mohammad Alam Ezidyar, deputy chairman, stressed the need for the arrangement of a Loya Jirga in line with the Constitution.
He said the government should first announce dates for Wolesi Jirga elections before making efforts at calling a Loya Jirga. He said the delay in announcing a date for holding elections to the Wolesi Jirga had caused uncertainty among the masses.
