Protestors again block Baghlan-Kunduz highway
PUL-I-KHUMRI (Pajhwok): Protestors, demanding the shifting of Baghlan’scapital to THE Baghlan-i-Markazi district, blocked the Baghlan-Kunduz highway for a second day on Friday.
On Thursday, some 200 people had blocked the busy highway in the Parchawah area of Baghlan-i-Markazi district. But the road was reopened after intervention from local officials.
They once again closed the road today to press for their demand, one of the protestors, Shad Mohammad, told Pajhwok Afghan News, “We opened the road yesterday due to passengers’ problems and blocked it again for traffic,”
He said local officials had failed to convince themon Thursday. They vowed to continue their demonstrations until the demandwas met.
But Deputy Governor Abdul Qadeem Niazi rejected the protestors’ demandas illogical. He advised the demonstrators to share their real problems with the central government.
Niazi argued shifting a provincial capital was presidential prerogative and the local authorities could not take any decision on the issue. The provincial capital was shifted from Baghlan-i-Markazi to Pul-i-Khumri in 1989 when Dr. Najibullah was president.
Tens of cars full of passengers and trucks were stranded on both ends of the highway that connects nine provinces in the north with Kabul. Passengers criticised the road blockade, asking the protestors not to create problems for the people.
