UN agencies should play facilitator’s role: Ghani
KABUL (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani on Saturday said the United Nations should play more effective role than the past in Afghanistan, urging the world’s body to share its experience with the Afghan government as a colleague.
The president expressed these views during a meeting with UN Development Programme (UNDP) administrator Helen Clark at the Presidential Palace, the palace said in a statement.
Speaking on the occasion, Clark said she was happy that the UN agencies’ evaluation had been completed. “Now we understand what Afghanistan expects from us. We’re committed to assisting and building capacity of the Afghan government.”
President Ghani urged the UN to share its experience and information with the Afghan government as a colleague and that government departments should solve problems themselves.
He said UN agencies in Afghanistan should play the role of a facilitator. Referring to the capacity-building of government departments, the president said: “We want their capacity to be improved so that the funds allocated to Afghanistan development are arranged.”
The president said the UN’s role in Afghanistan should be more effective than the past and called its role as crucial in the transfer of East Asia’s experience to Afghanistan.
He also called reforms for economic development as imperative, saying money existed in banks, but not a system how to issue loans to people.
Ghani said the UN could develop an effective system that could increase cooperation among regional countries during natural calamities.
The meeting also discussed the Law and Order Trust Fund for Afghanistan (LOFTA), with the UN officials saying they were committed to implementing the transfer of the system to the Afghan government.
The two sides also conferred on Afghanistan’s infrastructure, energy and renewable energy sectors and Clark praised Ghani’s idea of turning Afghanistan into a centre of regional connectivity, saying it was essential for the country’s multifaceted development.
