CSF disowns nominees for selection committee

CSF disowns nominees for selection committee

Nov 16, 2015 - 16:59

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Civil Societyinfo-icon Federation (CSF), a coalition of 18 organisations, on Monday said individuals introduced to the proposed Selection Committee did not represent the country’s civil society groups.

The selection committee is a proposed body tasked with nominating members of the two electoral commissions as part the Electoral Reform Commission’s suggestions presented to the government.

The selection committee would vet applications for membership of the electoral bodies and introduce 21 candidates for the membership of the Independent Election Commission (IECinfo-icon) and 15 for membership of the Independent Electoral Complaints Commission (IECC) to the president.

Out of these candidates, the president would select seven members for the IEC and five members for the IECC. The incumbent IEC and IECC members maintain their removal would be against the law.

Sidiqullah Ansari, CSF chief, said those introduced to the selection committee as civil society representatives did not represent a large portion of the society. He said no one could impose their decisions on civil societies until every organisation was taken into confidence.

He asked the government to provide an opportunity for civil society organizations to introduce their actual representatives because the current members had been introduced in an improper manner.

At the end of August, the Electoral Reform Commission (ERC), following discussions with different segments of society, submitted its set of 10 suggestions about electoral reforms to the government.

The president approved seven of the suggestions and tasked the panel to find ways for implementation of the other three suggestions.

Formation of the proposed seven-member selection committee is one of the ERC suggestions and the committee would be responsible to introduce fresh faces as members of the election bodies.
