2 senior Logar officials detained on corruption charges

PUL-I-ALAM (Pajhwok): Two senior provincial officials of central Logar province have been arrested on corruption charges, officials said on Friday.

The provincial land authority and mines and petroleum directors have been arrested.

A provincial council member Hasibullah Stanikzai told Pajhwok Afghan News mines and petroleum director Ajmal Sahak was arrested from Shahr-i-Naw area of capital Kabulinfo-icon on Thursday by intelligence officials.

He said Sahak had allegedly accepted $10,000 in bribe from some people to let them illegally extract minerals in Logar.

Governor Halim Fidai confirmed Sahak’s detention on his Facebook account and said the provincial government would continue efforts at eliminating corruption. He said Sahak was with judicial organs for investigation.

The Logar land authority director has also been detained on similar charges. Provincial crime branch chief Col. Mohammad Jan Abid said Abdul Ahad was detained by intelligence men in Logar on Thursday.

“Intelligence forces were directed by the governor’s house to arrest Ahad,” he added. He said Abdul Ahad had issued legal documents to illegal occupants of land measuring tens of acres.

Abid said 10 people had been detained on charges of land-grabbing in Logar during the past two weeks.
