Eliminate violence against women, EU tells Kabul

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The European Union (EU) on Tuesday voiced its concern over continuing violations of womeninfo-icon’s rights in Afghanistaninfo-icon, calling for implementation of relevant laws.

The EU special representative, the EU Delegation and the European Union Police Mission (EUPOL) renewed their commitment to eliminating violence against Afghan women and girls.

In a joint statement on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, they said respect for the rights of women remained a key objective of the EU human rights policy.

"Last month yet another young woman was stoned to death. This is totally unacceptable. The Afghan government must make sure that the ones responsible for this kind of crime are held accountable,” said EU Special Representative Franz-Michael Mellbin

Pia Stjernvall, EUPOL head of mission, called for Afghan government to take the implementation of the Law on Elimination of Violence against Women seriously.

The official stressed: “The Afghan legal system must stand up to its obligations and address these problems, punish the perpetrators and bring justice to the victims."
