3 children killed, 15 injured in Baghlan blast
PUL-I-KHUMRI (Pajhwok): At least three children were killed and another 15 injured on Tuesday when an unexploded munition went off at a playground in northern Baghlan province, an official said.
A number of children were playing with the device in Gharaw Shan area of Pul-i-Khumri city, the provincial capital, as it exploded around 11am, provincial police chief Col. Abdur Rashi Bashir told Pajhwok Afghan News.
He said the blast left three people dead and 15 others injured, adding that the incident was being investigated.
Deputy Baghlan public health director Dr. Abdul Alim Ghafari also confirmed receiving three dead bodies and 15 injured children, all below the age 16 years. He said two girls were also among the injured and the condition of seven children was critical.
Mohammad Aslam, a resident of the area whose son and a daughter were injured in the incident, said children found a warhead in a ruined house and they were pulling out its gunpowder when it blew up.
He said the condition of his eight-year-old daughter was critical. The bodies of three children killed in the incident were mutilated, he added.
