Senators roiled by US embassy warning of possible attack

Senators roiled by US embassy warning of possible attack

Dec 01, 2015 - 17:44

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Some members of Meshrano Jirgainfo-icon on Tuesday sharply reacted to a statement from the US embassy in Kabul regarding the possibility of a suicide attack, asking the mission not to confuse people.

A day earlier, the embassy said in a statement on its website it had received credible reports that there would be suicide attack in the next 48 hours. It warned US citizens in Kabul to avoid unnecessary commuting in the city.

“The US embassy is confusing the people. Instead of to sharing the issue with media, it could have shared the report with the security personnel,” remarked Senator Farhad Sakhi, who argued warnings dented people’s morale.

“If the embassy has any report, why it doesn’t take preventive steps?” asked another senator, Gulalai Akbari. She advised the US embassy to avoid sharing with the people any information that was meant only for American citizens.

Other members of the upper house rejected the statement as baseless, asking the embassy to refrain from actions that tended to scare the ordinary people.

“It is not the first time the US embassy has released such a baseless report and share it with the media,” said the Meshrano Jirga chairman.

Fazal Hadi Muslimyar suggested: “If the embassy has any credible information, it should be shared with the security personnel and US citizens in a way that people are not bothered.”
