Fake ‘guru’ detained for raping Delhi-based Afghan model
KABUL (Pajhwok): An Indian man, posing as a spiritual leader, has been detained for repeatedly raping an aspiring Afghan model, a newspaper reported on Sunday.
Based in New Delhi, the 24-year-old Afghan approached the fake ‘Baba’ in Palwal area along with her sister on her neighbour’s advice in June this year, The Hindu reported.
Tara Chand, 46, promised the woman he would exercise his spiritual prowess to turn around her sagging fortunes and she would soon rise meteorically in her modelling career.
In the beginning, the woman visited the Guru a few times in Palwal, where he performed his phony sorcerous rites. But a month later, the man went to her residence and asked the woman to drink water that left her unconscious.
The model was quoted as telling Delhi police that she was raped. When she protested after regaining consciousness, the guru warned her of death in her family if she disclosed the saga to anyone.
In the following weeks, the daily alleged, the man repeatedly rape her and also extorted one million rupees from her. The woman lodged a report with police on November 27 against Tara Chand.
“We put the accused person on surveillance and raided his possible hideouts. He was tracked down in Palwal and arrested after laying a trap,” a police officer told the newspaper.
