7 police among 22 wounded in Surkhrod suicide attack
JALALABAD (Pajhwok): At least 22 people were injured on Monday morning when in a suicide attacker detonated a truck bomb near a police base in eastern Nangarhar province.
The bombing took place close to the police headquarters in Surkhrod district at 5.00am.
Governor Salim Khan Kunduzi told Pajhwok Afghan News 22 people, including seven police personnel, had been wounded and several shops, a mosque and the police headquarters damaged.
He said the bomb attack involved a Hino truck. Most of the civilians injured in the incident were local shopkeepers and residents, he added.
Kunduzi did not put a figure on the losses inflicted on shopkeepers in the area. He said information about damages would be shared with the media later on.
Public Health Director Dr. Najibullah Kamawal confirmed receiving 12 injured individuals at the hospital. Nine of them were discharged after being administered first medical aid.
But Residents of Surkhrod district said that the truck full of explosives was exploded on highway close to the police headquarters.
Shakir, a guard of the district bazaar, said: “It was around 6am when a strong explosion shook the entire area, kicking up a storm of dust for 10 minutes.”
Shamsullah, a shopkeeper in the area, said the trucker parked his vehicle in the locality despite warnings from police. But the driver said he would take away he truck after offering Fajr prayers in a nearby mosque.
But other residents said the truck was moving when the blast took place. The Khogyani-Surkhrod and Jalalabad-Surkhrod roads were closed for some hours after the incident.
“Around 50 shops have been destroyed and hundreds others damaged. The walls of a nearby mosque collapsed and the police headquarters as well as some military vehicles were damaged,” resident Sana Gul said.
The powerful explosion was heard in far-off areas, according to another inhabitant, Omaid, who said windowpanes in many houses were shattered.
Apart from Taliban, Islamic State (Daesh) militants are also active in Nangarhar, particularly in Achin district, where scores of fighters have been killed in recent weeks.
