KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani has said the perpetrators of Friday’s mortar shelling that killed some civilians in central Maidan Wardak province would be tried, promising to construct a religious school with his pocket money in the name of those martyred in the incident.

In a meeting with relatives of the victims and elders from Maidan Wardak on Sunday evening at the Presidential Palace in Kabul, the president said the army battalion accused of the shelling would be replaced.

Ten people, including eight children, were killed and six others wounded when a mortar landed near a mosqueinfo-icon in the Sayedabad district.

The incident drew strong criticism from local residents and the government appointed a delegation to investigate it.

According to a statement from the Presidential Palace, the elders from Maidan Wardak, including Eng. Syed Rahim Sattar, Haji Balimin and Haji Janan, briefed the president about the incident and other security problems in the province.

They urged the government to improve security and take measures for reforms in the province and construct a seminary in the memory of the victims.

Extending his condolences to the bereaved families, the president said: “I can feel your pain because it is my own pain and the pain of my family.”

The president praised the patience exhibited by the bereaved families and said: “Narrating details of the incident with such courage and patience draws a lesson for those responsible.”

Ghani said the Ministry of Defence would replace the army battalion in Sayeadad with a new one and those responsible for the deadly mortar fire would be subjected to judicial investigation.

He assured the nation that the government would seriously investigate such incidents. He promised to construct a seminar with his own money in the name of the martyrs.
