Anti-president remarks: Spymaster’s resignation accepted

Anti-president remarks: Spymaster’s resignation accepted

Dec 10, 2015 - 14:12

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani on Thursday accepted the resignation of the National Directorate of Security (NDSinfo-icon) chief, hours after he passed critical remarks against the head of state.

“I regret,” spymaster Rahmatullah Nabil wrote a day earlier on in his Facebook page about the President Ashraf Ghani’s trip to Pakistaninfo-icon and the warm welcome he was accorded by the host leadership.

Nabil said President Ghani was given a 21-gun salute and a guard of honour at the Nur Khan Airbase in Islamabad while innocent civilians in Kandahar, Helmand and other provinces were under attack by Pakistan-backed militants.

He also denounced the operation launched by Afghan security forces against Tehreek-i-Talibaninfo-icon Pakistan (TTP) leader Mullahinfo-icon Fazlullah as an act of appeasing the neighbouring country.

The intelligence chief asked: “Where has my 5,000 years history gone? It has surrendered to a history of 60 years.” The critical observations angered the administration, which decided to investigate the intelligence chief.

An official at the Presidential Palace, wishing anonymity, confided to Pajhwok Afghan News that Nabil had tendered his resignation earlier in the morning.

The source revealed President Ghani, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr. Abdullah Abdullah and some other officials went into an emergency meeting on the issue before noon. At the meeting, Nabil’s resignation was approved.

“Nabil’s remarks are really surprising. We won’t expect such words from him, or the head of any security organ, who can’t criticise their president in such a way,” another official said.
