'Displeased' IDLG chief resigns, leaves for US
KABUL (Pajhwok): Independent Directorate of Local Governance (IDLG) chief Jilani Popal has resigned and left for the United States after developing differences with the unity government, an official said on Sunday, but president spokesman rejected the report.
A source privy to the development said Popal was displeased with President Ashraf Ghani’s response to an issue, but he did not explain the issue.
The source told Pajhwok Afghan News the IDLG head had resigned and traveled to the US.
Earlier there had been reports that Popal has resigned. IDLG spokeswoman Munira Yousufzada confirmed to Pajhwok Afghan News Popal had left for the US.
But she said Popal was visiting the US on an official holiday which had been approved by President Ghani.
But the government source said Abdul Salam Rahimi, the current chief of staff of the Presidential Palace, would be appointed as finance minister and Eklil Hakimi, the current finance minister, would be appointed the president’s chief of staff.
However, president’s spokesman Zafar Hashimi said neither Popal had resigned nor any changes would come to the finance ministry leadership and the presidential palace chief of staff.
An IDLG official, who wished to go unnamed, said they had sent letters to provinces about Popal’s absence and the appointment of the acting head.
Officials in eastern Nangarhar and Logar provinces confirmed receiving the letters.
