16 rebels killed, 20 wounded in Helmand firefight
LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Sixteen Taliban insurgents were killed and another 20 wounded during overnight clashes with security forces in southern Helmand province, officials said on Wednesday.
The rebels suffered casualties after they attacked security checkpoints in Greshk district on Tuesday night, police spokesman 2nd Lt. Shah Mahmud Ashna told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Five ALP members were also wounded in the gun battle, he said, adding another two local policemen were wounded in separate clashes in Nad Ali and Sangin districts.
Taliban spokesman Qari Yousuf Ahmadi said the rebels had captured some checkpoints during last night attack in Greshk.
He claimed 11 security personnel had joined the Taliban in Marja district. Local officials are yet to comment on Ahmadi’s claim.
