Afghan govt failing to implement UNSC resolution: Dutch envoy

Afghan govt failing to implement UNSC resolution: Dutch envoy

Dec 16, 2015 - 18:00

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Dutch Ambassador in Kabul Hand Jan Bakker on Wednesday alleged the Afghan government was failing to implement the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolution on womeninfo-icon’s capacity building and their active role in peace and stability of the country.

Bakker was addressing a gathering “Afghanistaninfo-icon in 2016: Opportunities and Challenges for Women Participation in Politics and Leadership” in Kabul.

The gathering was attended by human and women’s rights activists who discussed women’s rights in Afghanistan and implementation of the National Action Plan (NAP) on women’s security and peace.

The Dutch ambassador said the Afghan government lacked the political will to implement the UNSC resolution 1325. The envoy said defence and interior ministries of the country had more responsibility to enforce women’s related articles of the resolution. He said only top leadership of the country had awareness about the importance of the UNSC resolution.

He said the Netherlands had promised $12 million with Afghanistan to support capacity development of and their active role in politics and the peace process.

In addition, he said his country was supporting women’s access to justice, gender equality, awareness, their participation in elections, and mitigating violence against them in coordination with the UN and other NGOs.

Saera Bano, the head of Gender Concerns International, asked the Afghan government to implement the UNSC resolution on women’s rights in Afghanistan.

She said the implementation of the resolution would empower Afghan women and would enable them to play an active role in the country’s politics and other issues.
