Syedabad mortar fire perpetrators to be punished: Ghani
KABUL (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani, who visited central Maidan Wardak province, on Friday said the perpetrators of a mortar shelling that killed nine civilians in the Syedabad district would be punished.
About two weeks ago, mortar shells fired by Afghan National Army troops landed near a mosque, killing nine civilians and injuring six others, mostly children.
President Ghani arrived in the province at the head of a high-level delegation, a statement from the Maidan Wardak governor’s house said.
It said the president was accompanied by Interior Minister Noorul Haq Ulomi, Chief of Army Staff Gen. Qadam Shah Shaheem, his advisor on political affairs Mohammad Akram Khpalwak and other officials.
Ghani first offered prayers for the departed souls of the Syedabad residents at a gathering held in Maidan Shahr and thanked the families of the victims and people of the province for exhibiting complete patience after the tragic incident.
The president said problems of the people of Wardak would be addressed and those involved in the mortar fire incident would be punished in accordance with the law.
He told the people of Maidan Wardak that security was one of the government’s top priorities and work in this regard was underway. He said he would not make many promises and people of the province would be informed once practical steps were taken towards solution to their problems.
