Ghani in Baku as Afghanistan, Azerbaijan sign two documents
KABUL (Pajhwok): Afghanistan and Azerbaijan officials on Tuesday signed two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) on cooperation in the spheres of labour, social protection, employment and media during President Ashraf Ghani’s visit to the country.
President Ghani, who arrived to a red-carpet welcome in Baku, met his Azerbaijani counterpart Ilham Aliyev and both leaders discussed relations between the two countries, a statement from the Presidential Palace in Kabul said.
Aliyev said the Afghan leader’s visit would strengthen relations between the two countries, calling Afghanistan an important ally and thanked Kabul for supporting Azerbaijan in the UN Security Council.
He said Azerbaijan wanted to cooperate with Afghanistan in areas of infrastructure development, including link roads and railroad projects and would try to accomplish the idea of the new Silk Road which links Asia with Europe through Armenia, Azerbaijan and Turkey.
For his part, Ghani also thanked the host country for its role concerning NATO’s Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan and welcomed Azerbaijan’s cooperation in the fight against terrorism.
“We want to assess the Azerbaijani investment in Afghanistan and work on a mechanism that guarantees that investment in Afghanistan. A joint team of both the countries would work to assess possible threats to entrepreneurships,” he said.
Ghani urged experience sharing between the two countries in spheres of mines, commerce, energy and textile.
Aliyev said his country would help in training Afghan students in civil service, police, security, disasters, diplomacy and energy. He said Azerbaijan would share its information and experiences with Afghanistan in the sphere of private sector, big contracts of natural resources and agriculture.
At the end of the meeting and in the presence of the two leaders, both countries signed two MoUs on cooperation in the sphere of labor, social protection and employment and media.
One of the documents was signed by Azerbaijan’s Minister of Labor and Social Protection of Population Salim Muslumov and Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister Salahuddin Rabbani.
The sides also signed an agreement “on cooperation between Azerbaijan Television and Radio Broadcasting Closed Joint-Stock Company and the Radio Television Afghanistan (RTA).
The agreement was signed by head of the Azerbaijani closed joint-stock company Arif Alishanov and Sultan Ahmad Bahen on behalf of RTA between the labour and social ministries regarding work opportunities, social safety.
Ghani is accompanied by Foreign Minister Salahuddin Rabani, Finance Minister Eklil Hakimi, Mines Minister Daud Shah Saba, Transport Minister Mohammadullah Batash, Public Works Minister Mahmood Baligh, Energy and Water Minister Ali Ahmad Osmani, Urban Development Minister Syed Sadat Naderi and other officials.
