Dec 24, 2015 - 20:06

HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Head of the appellant court of western Herat province on Thursday said the court had decided 35,000 cases during the past four years and 64 death sentences were awaiting president’s signature.

Abdul Ghafar Zubair told a press conference the cases included criminal and legal and they were decided during the past four years under his term as director.

“Of 66 death row prisoners only two have been sent to the gallows and the president is yet to sign death warrants for the rest,” he said.

He said the court had investigated 4500 cases over the past six months and awarded death sentences to 15 people and the rest different terms of imprisonment.

Currently there are 490 legal and 185 criminal cases being heard at different courts of the province, a judge, Zubair, said. He said one of the main problems facing judges was security threats.
