Govt should announce election schedule soon: Gilani
KABUL (Pajhwok): The Supreme Council of Jihadi and National Parties on Monday asked the government to announce the schedule for parliamentary and district council elections and increase political parties’ role in the democratic exercise.
Inaugurating an office for the council, the party’s spokesman Syed Hamid Gilani said the government should declare the election schedule as soon as possible.
He said the country needed an electoral system that strengthened political parties because it would be difficult to institutionalise democracy without their participation.
He said the council believed democracy was meaningless in the absence of political parties, which should be given a clear role in the electoral regime.
“Peace is a necessity, our party welcomes every positive step taken for peace in the country,” Gilani said, adding that the council had prepared a comprehensive draft for the peace talks and would hand it over to the government in near future.
“Corruption is the main challenge to reforms and the rule of law in the country, but instead of being reduced, the corruption has increased,” he said, calling joblessness another challenge that forced the youth into leaving the country.
The council, a coalition of nearly a dozen parties, declared its presence in September 2015 and officially commenced its work last week.
Well-known former jihdi figures Abdul Rab Rassoul Sayaff, Mohammad Younus Qanuni, Ismael Khan and Abdul Hadi Arghandiwal are among members of the council.
The president had said it was for the Independent Election Commission to announce dates for holding the ballots.
