Top peace emissary gunned down in Samangan
AIBAK (Pajhwok): A top peace negotiator was on Monday gunned down by two unknown attackers in northern Samangan province, police said.
The High Peace Council (HPC)’s provincial committee head for Samangan, Qari Saifuddin Sadat, was returning home from a mosque after evening prayers when the two assailants opened fire at him in Aibak, the provincial capital, police chief Brig. Gen. Mohammad Baqir Massoud told Pahwok Afghan News.
Sadat was rushed to the Civil Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, he said, adding that police had sealed the area and had launched a search operation to arrest the attackers.
A doctor on duty at the hospital, Samsullah Alami, said the peace negotiator had been shot in the chest.
Sadat took over as the provincial peace committee chief about three months ago after his predecessor resigned.
There has been no claim of responsibility for his murder.
