Parliamentary vote schedule next week, says IEC chief

Parliamentary vote schedule next week, says IEC chief

Jan 06, 2016 - 16:14

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Independent Election Commission (IECinfo-icon) chief Yousuf Nuristani on Wednesday said the schedule for parliamentary and district council elections would be announced next week and no foreign or local organization would be allowed to interfere in the county’s electoral process.

Speaking to reporters here, Nuristani said the IEC was fully prepared to conduct the elections and announce a schedule.

He said the commission with the help of its technical team, national and international observers would announce the schedule next week and would it to the government as well.

Earlier, President Ashraf Ghani had said his government is ready to hold parliamentary and district council elections between summer and autumn of next year.

The president made the pledge during separate meetings with members of the Electoral Reform Commission and the selection committee at the Presidential Palace.

Nuristani said the IEC would act as an independent and neutral body and would allow no group to interfere in its affairs.

He said the Election Reform Commission (ERC) and the Selection Committee had no legal acceptance after the parliament rejected presidential decrees regarding them.

The IEC has estimated at $63 millions the costs for holding elections to the Wolesi Jirgainfo-icon and district councils.
