US army to deploy 500 soldiers to Afghanistan
About 500 soldiers from Fort Drum, New York, will travel to Afghanistan later this winter on a regular rotation to replace outgoing units, the army said in a statement.
The 500 soldiers, tapped for deployment, will advise their Afghan partners during the nine-month tour. The unit will complete a rotation this month at the Joint Readiness Training Center.
In Afghanistan, 2-87 Infantry will join the 10th Mountain Division headquarters, which is serving at Bagram Air Field as the National Support Element.
Currently, 9,800 US troops are in Afghanistan to train and advise Afghan forces and conduct counterterrorism operations.
Despite President Barack Obama’s declarationof an end to the combat mission last fall, American forces are increasingly being drawn back into the war in Afghanistan.
