More than 30 killed in ongoing firefight in Greshk district
LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): A gunbattle is ongoing between police and Taliban fighters in the Greshk district of southern Helmand province, causing casualties on both sides, officials said on Wednesday.
The insurgents attacked police checkpoints in the Adam Kala area of the district on Tuesday night when a firefight erupted. The clash was ongoing as of 10am, the district police chief, 1st Lt. Mohammad Ismael Khpalwak, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Twenty Taliban fighters have been killed and 16 others wounded in the clash and the dead bodies of 11 attackers lay at the scene, he claimed.Three policemen have also been killed and five others wounded in the battle.
The governor’s spokesman, Omer Zwak confirmed the attack, but had no information about casualties. But a security official said on condition of anonymity that 13 policemen had so far been killed.
On the other hand, Taliban spokesmanZabihullah Mujahidsaid the fighters attacked the police checkpoint in the Adam Kali area of Greshk, inflicting casualties on six policemen.
