Girl found hanged; forced engagement cited as motive

Girl found hanged; forced engagement cited as motive

Jan 14, 2016 - 12:01

FEROZKOH (Pajhwok): The body of a 10-year-old girl, who hanged herself in her house, has been found in western Ghorinfo-icon province, an official said on Thursday, linking the incident to forced engagement.

Crime branch chief, Col. Abdul Hadi Chilghori, said Mah Gul’s body was found wrapped up in a cloth in the Refugee Township area of Ferozkoh, the provincial capital, on Wednesday night.

He told Pajhwok Afghan News Mah Gul was recently engaged to his 10-year-old cousin. He believed the decision was against her will and she had no option but to hang herself.

Col. Abdul Hadi Chilghori said Gul was illiterate and her father had been in prison for the past six months. Her mother had gone to jail to visit her husband when the girl committed suicide.

Womeninfo-icon’s Affairs Director Masooma Anwari, meanwhile, expressed concerns over the death of the girl and demanded immediate investigation into the incident.

She said the killings of girls and women were often shown as suicide to save the murderers. She explained childhood engagements caused disagreement at a later stage.

Anwari believed Mah Gul might have been killed as she being 10-year-old knew little about suicide. Police said investigations were underway and if she had been killed, the perpetrators would be dragged to the court.
