One of missing Afghan Air Force trainees located in US

Jan 14, 2016 - 10:44

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): One of the two Afghan Air Force (AAF) students, attending a training course in the Georgia state of America, has been found, a media report said on Thursday.

Assigned to the 81st Fighter Squadron, the trainees -- identified as Mirwais Kohistani and Shirzad Rohullah -- did not report for duty in December at Moody Air Force Base.

No details were immediately available as to when or where the airman was located. The USA Today quoted Department of Homeland Security sources as saying a search for the second man was ongoing.

Last month, visas were cancelledfor both men, who had been training at the base since February 2015. They were return to Afghanistaninfo-icon after graduation on Dec. 18.

The students trained alongside American counterparts for the entirety of 2015 and do not pose any apparent threat, base officials said. They hd been screened prior to their arrival in the US more than a year ago."

They were among nine pilots and 14 maintenance crew who were at Moody Air Force Base for much of 2015. The missing men, one an AFF lieutenant and the other a senior master sergeant, were from the maintenance crew.

In 2014, Afghan soldiers disappeared in Massachusetts. They were later found trying to seek asylum near the Canadian border. In another instance, soldiers went missing during a Washington tour before being sent back to Afghanistan.
