Pugwash to arrange conference on Afghanistan in Doha

Pugwash to arrange conference on Afghanistan in Doha

Jan 16, 2016 - 12:10

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): An international conference on resolving the Afghanistaninfo-icon conflict is scheduled to be held in Qatar’s capital Doha next month, a source revealed on Saturday.

The Pugwash-sponsored conference is expected to take place in a couple of weeks. The Canadian research organisation has arranged several gatherings on Afghanistan’s future.

An invitee, who did not want to be named, confided to Pajhwok Afghan News that representatives of different political entities and individuals would take part in the two-day discussions.

The invitees have already submitted their passports for visas to the event organisers. The participants will float their ideas and recommendations for lasting peace in Afghanistan.

The Talibaninfo-icon, who have also been invited to the conference, are yet to say anything in this regard. The movement has attended such meetings in the past.

Pugwash arranged a meeting on security in Afghanistan in Doha on May 2-3, 2015. The meeting involved more than 40 participants, all of whom represented only him/herself and not any institution or group.

Representatives from the High Peace Councilinfo-icon, Taliban, Hezb-i-Islamiinfo-icon, civil societyinfo-icon organisations, United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) and womeninfo-icon’s rights activists had attended last year’s meeting.

The idea of bringing to Afghanistan and ending the conflict was wholeheartedly supported by all participants, who lamented civilian casualties. The role of foreign forces in Afghanistan was evaluated in different ways.
