10 rebels killed, 4 hideouts destroyed in Jawzjan operation
SHIBRGHAN (Pajhwok): At least 10 militants have been killed and their four hideouts destroyed during an operation in northwestern Jawzjan province, an official said on Sunday.
Police officer Col. Abdul Hafiz Khashi said the operation was launched four days ago in villages near the highway connecting Shiberghan, the provincial capital, with Sar-i-Pul.
He added 10 rebels were killed and one detained during the operation. Four insurgent bases were also destroyed in Torkhel, Sherkhel and Khwaja Burhan villages.
Salahuddin, a resident of the area, said such operations had been ineffective in the past, because the militants returned after security forces left the scene.
He accused the militants of forcibly collecting Zakat and Ushr, as well as food from the people. Those refusing to meet such demands were tortured, the resident complained.
However, local security officials said uprising groups were actively fighting against the militants in the villages.
The Taliban previously searchedvehicles to seize government servants on the highway. Two months earlier, they kidnapped five Afghanistan Breshna Shirkat (DABS) personnel, but released after elders’ mediation.
