Insecurity impedes progress on turbine installation
LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Provincial council members on Sunday said the third turbine at the Kajaki hydropower dam could not be installed due to growing insecurity in southern Helmand province.
Insecurity has increased in Kajaki and Sangin districts, bringing to a halt the installation work on the third electric power turbine on Kajaki dam, the provincial council chief, Karim Khan Atal, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
“The turbine was being installed by foreigners, but they shifted it elsewhere due to insecurity in Kajaki,” he said, asking security organs to help the contractor complete the installation work.
Atal’s deputy, Abdul Majid Akhunzada, confirmed security issues in Kajaki and asked the government to maintain security of the hydropower plant.
“Kajaki dam is important to us because it will electrify our homes and irrigate our lands,” he said, complaining that most of the budget for the dam would go to salaries of foreign employees.
“We are fed up talking about construction of the Kajaki dam. It is better to abandon the dam project instead of making fake promises with people,” a resident of Lashkargah, Gula Jan said.
He asked the government to improve security in Kajaki to allow proper and continued work on the dam.
However, Da Afghanistan Breshna Shirkat spokesman Amanullah Ayub Farooqi rejected these assertions as baseless.
He said work on the installation of the third turbine was rapidly ongoing. The current insecurity could not bring to a halt the turbine installation work, he said, adding that 35 percent of the work had been completed.
