Renowned singer Hayat Gardezi dies in Kabul
KABUL (Pajhwok): A renowned singer Hayat Gardezi on Thursday died in hospital in Kabul after a heart attack, an official said.
Gardezi, who was also the head of artists’ union, suffered a heart attack and was rushed to hospital where he breathed his last, deputy information and culture minister for youth affairs, Dr. Kamal Sadat, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Also member of the Loya Paktika Council, Sadat expressed his condolences to the bereaved family on behalf of his ministry and the council. He said the demise of Gardezi was a huge blow to Afghanistan’s culture and art.
Hayat Gardezi was born in Ahmadabad district of southeastern Paktia province 61 years ago and started singing at the age of 18 years.
Initially, he entertained audience at hujras and local events as a volunteer singer before joining radio and television.
Sadat said Gardezi had sung hundreds of songs including national songs, folk songs and regional, but his attan songs were highly famous. The singer had been heading the union of artists for the past few years.
His funeral prayers would be offered at Eid Gah mosque in Kabul on Friday.
