Nangarhar police detain suspects in journalist murder
JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Police on Sunday claimed to have arrested three suspects in the slaying of a journalist in eastern Nangarhar province.
The slain Radio Television Afghanistan (RTA) journalist, Mohammad Zubair Khaksar, was also advisor to the provincial governor on culture affairs. He was found gunned down at nighttime on Jan 29 in Sara Rud district.
President Ashraf Ghani and his security team, the National Security Council (NSC), had directed security departments to investigate Khaksar’s murder, identify and arrest the killers.
Nangarhar crime branch police chief Col. Abdul Zahir Zahir told reporters here that three suspects, family members of Khaksar’s in-laws, had been arrested for their alleged involvement in the murder.
“The detainees include Khaksar’s father-in-law, brother-in-law and another relative. They have been introduced to the attorneys and it would become clear what motivated the murder.”
Speaking at the same press conference, police spokesman Col. Hazrat Hussain Mashriqiwal said initial investigation showed the murder had resulted from a family dispute, but he could not confirm it, pending the investigation.
Khaksar’s in-laws have so far said nothing in this regard and brother and son of the journalist during his funeral prayers had said they had no enmity with anyone.
The crime branch police chief also said three suspects had been arrested in connection with the murder of provincial council Javed Zaman’s driver.
Col. Zahir said the driver was gunned down few weeks ago and investigation from the detainees was underway.
About increasing incidents of kidnapping, the official said there had been two cases of kidnapping during the past two weeks and police had arrested the kidnappers and rescued the captives.
