111 prisoners including 17 women freed from Herat jail
HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): More than a 110 prisoners have been released from the central jail of western Herat province and prison terms of another 76 inmates reduced, an official said on Tuesday.
Abdullah Azizi, Herat central jail commander, told Pajhwok Afghan News 111 prisoners, including 17 women, had been freed.
Eight children had been released from a juvenile detention center in compliance with a presidential decree, he said.“Based on the decree, jail terms of 76 prisoners have been reduced.”
Jamshid Saljuqi, an attorney evaluating detention centres, said only small-time offenders had been given relief under the decree. Around 3,000 prisoners, including 147 women,are being held in Herat prison.
